CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER SHOT AND KILLED IN LINE OF DUTY
Officer Krystal Rivera, a 36 year old four-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and a member of the Gresham District tactical team, was shot and killed Thursday night while serving her city in one of its most dangerous neighborhoods.
The shooting occurred around 9:50 p.m near East 82nd Street and South Drexel Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side. According to law enforcement sources, Officer Rivera was struck in the chest by rifle fire during a tactical operation. The chilling words “Shots fired at police,” echoed through the police radio moments after the attack. Officers rushed Officer Rivera in a patrol vehicle to University Medical Center when their vehicle crashed en route and caught fire. (Per radio traffic)
Despite medical efforts, Officer Rivera died from her injuries. She was a mother and a daughter. As of early Friday morning there are no suspects in custody. Our hearts go to the entire Chicago Police Department.
